The Wassners from Zmijowiska (Austria-Hungary)

After a crossing that took 11 days, the S. S. Rotterdam sailed into New York harbor from Holland on June 18, 1900.

The passenger manifest of the Rotterdam notes that among its passengers was an émigré from Austria-Hungary one Mendel Wasner [sic], who gave as his last residence a place called Zmijowiska. Later Max, as he was known, would marry Esther Goldstein, who had arrived in New York in 1903 from Wielkie Oczy.

Passenger records of the S. S. Konigen Luise, which arrived  in New York harbor in June, 1898, note the arrival of Chaim Wasner [sic], Max's brother, who also gave Zmijowiska as his last residence.

Below, you will find links to photographs of Zmijowiska that were taken during April, 2001.

Zmijowiska, though near Wielkie Oczy, is a rural, agricultural community. It had no synagogue and Jewish residents had to go Wielkie Oczy to attend synagogue. Vital records of the Jews of Zmijowiska, such as they may exist today, are co-mingled with those of the Jewish community of Wielkie Oczy.
